I chose the Encourage Student Responsibility for
Learning-Pelz YouTube video, which is published by Penn State University (PSU)
World Campus Faculty Development, uploaded on August 18,2011. This channel is
set up to share thoughts and ideas about a variety of topics relevant to Online
Education.
Summary this interview video, Bill Pelz, who is
instructional designer and Professor of Psychology, thinks students have more
capabilities than inductors usually give them credit is the key that
instructors will have an effective online course. Encourage students have
responsibility so instructors let students guide their own education they want.
Also, students will evaluation after their learning. Bill gave an strategy
example: After reading assignment or a mini lecture, have students themselves
to ask questions about the content on issues that they want to explore further.
Larry asked a question about how deep would a discussion board go of the issue.
Then, Bill said it could be very deep because he make responsible for
initiating the question, which require critical thinking and critical analysis
to answer. Bill’s theory is teaching is learning so when students do the
teaching presence they are doing most of leaning. It is a win-win result.
I agree with professor Bill Pelz’s online course
suggestion. Most of the students just follow assignments and do what they need
to do. But, base on Bill’s teaching method, students will learn more on their
interested and learn from classmates’ learning. However, I think instructor
should have ability to ask “good” question to guide students and trust students
will have responsibility to do their learning.
How much do you trust your students?
This video attracted me because teachers prevent
students’ cheating before exam in my entire education experiences. Bill
believes that educator turns over responsibility to students can create a
win-win learning outcome. How much do you trust your students? Will they really
search data by themselves?
